Chances are you already have a full schedule. It isn’t practical to think you can add moving to it without some changes. Carve out time for decluttering, packing, paperwork, and the actual moving. Make time for unpacking your belongings at the new home. Try to take vacation days if you have them. Even one day on either side of the weekend can turn into three great days to get things in motion for the move. Plan your agenda for what you would like to accomplish. If possible, get someone to watch the kids so you can focus on the moving. Plan easy meals or get take out so you don’t have to try to fit the daily tasks into your schedule too. The more you can do to focus just on the moving, the faster it will be done.
Pack well in advance in sturdy boxes. Each one should be marked so you know where it goes and what is in it. Pack by going through rooms one at a time and taking out what you do not need. As the date to move gets closer, remove more and more. When it is time to move, it should be just the large furnishings that remain in the rooms. As you pack, have some bins or boxes ready for what isn’t going with you. Anything that is broken or damaged should go in the trash. Items you no longer use but someone else can benefit from, should go into a donation pile. Don’t move anything to your new home that you don’t have a use for.
It is best to clean the old home completely after you have all of your items out of it. This can be time consuming. Consider hiring someone to do the work for you. They can start as soon as the movers have all of your items out. Make sure you inspect it before you pay them for their time.
Take along a bag or suitcase with sleepwear and a change of clothing for each household member. Make sure you also have essentials for each of them. Pack some water and snacks too so you are able to cover the basics if there are any delays with your household items being delivered or unpacked. Keep some cash accessible too just in case you need it. Be ready for the unexpected and don’t let it get the better of you. With these tips in mind, moving house can be a stress free and productive experience.
