Barkly Street Resurfacing Upgrades

Maribyrnong City Council is planning resurfacing works along Barkly Street, Footscray, between Summerhill Road and Geelong Road, and is seeking community feedback on proposed upgrades aimed at improving pedestrian and bike safety.

The project is being considered due to gaps in bike infrastructure, a history of crashes and near misses, and the high volume of students, pedestrians, bus passengers and motorists using the corridor. Council also notes that vehicle speeds are regularly above the posted 40km/h limit and that the road is due for resurfacing.

What is being considered?

Proposed upgrades include:

• Safer, more continuous protected bike lanes
• Improved pedestrian crossings and pedestrian refuges
• A new centre median with trees planted where space allows
• Changes to parking, turning movements and the road layout
• Bus stop upgrades, subject to approval from the State Government

Potential changes to parking and traffic

The proposed works may result in changes to existing parking arrangements, including the removal of 34 of the 96 current on-street parking spaces along Barkly Street. Of these, 21 spaces are on the north side between Gordon Street and Geelong Road.

Council is also considering the removal of No Stopping 4pm–6pm restrictions on the south side between Gordon Street and Geelong Road, with most parking retained, as well as some local traffic movement changes, such as a proposed right-turn ban at Everard Street.

Council is asking the local community to provide feedback before the final designs are confirmed. Works will not begin until community feedback has been considered and reported back.
